Seventeen year old Sinta Allen has one objective, to get from Tallahassee, Florida to her mother in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Seems simple enough right? Wrong. Hostile aliens have invaded Earth—and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that we’re losing the fight. While the aliens bring devastation and destruction and take people away to God knows where in their spaceships, Sinta, along with some of her classmates must rely on their survival instincts, a little luck and each other if they want to survive the venture across the country. The last thing she needs is for Wade, her school friend and Jason, her rescuer, to distract her along the way.
“Please mom,” I say, whining. “I really don’t want to go.”
“Sinta, you know I love it when you help me out, but this conversation is getting old. We’ve been going round and round like this for months. You’re going, end of story.” She pulls into an empty parking space and turns off the car. “I’ll help you with your things,” she says, popping the trunk.
Feeling defiant, and with nothing else to lose, I cross my arms and don’t move. She opens her door and gets out. I hear her saying good morning to some of the other parents and kids, but I don’t budge.
I recognize the kids passing my car with their bags either in their hands or over their shoulders. Some look my way and smile. Some even wave enthusiastically. All are in grades below mine. With this being my senior year, I don’t expect many others from my class to be here. Like I told my mom, band camp isn’t needed for anyone’s college application, especially since most of us seniors applied for college last summer or during the beginning of first semester. Besides Mia and Ian, I expect to be hanging around a bunch of younger kids.
Through the side mirror I see my mom coming up to my door. I quickly lock it. Childish? Yes.
She raps on the window and, when I don’t answer, she raps again, this time faster and harder. When I still ignore her she leans closer to the window. “For the love of God, if you keep it up I will unlock this door and drag your skinny tail out and strangle you in front of everyone here and still make you get on that bus.”
My mom has never hit me before, she’s full of threats and they usually prove empty. I turn to see her glaring daggers at me.
The look on her face says that she intends to do as she said and more. I open the door and step out and around her. I grab my duffle and sleeping bag from the trunk and head to the bus.
“Aren’t you going to at least kiss me goodbye?” she yells out after me.
“I can’t. I need to hurry. I don’t want the fun to start without me.”
Without turning I raise my hand in the air, saying bye. Of course she’ll be mad for a little while, but then she’ll start missing me. I’m her only daughter and she forced me to go on a trip I didn’t want to take. I think by tomorrow afternoon she’ll be calling the camp to check up on me.
I set my things next to the other bags on the ground by the side of the bus and climb the stairs. I only stop briefly to see if Mia has made it yet.
She and Ian are huddled in a back seat, kissing.
Lovely. The fun is starting already.
I walk down the aisle, passing ninth and tenth graders. Closer to the back are the eleventh graders and, taking up the last three rows, the twelfth graders. Myles Jackson or MJ as he’s called and Shayla Day have a seat across from Mia and Ian. Seeing MJ surprises me, because he’s a jock and the number one football prospect from Michigan. He doesn’t need band camp to go on any application. Michael and Aaron take up another seat, with MJ’s best friend Eric and his girlfriend Melissa across from them. Then there’s Daniel and Andrew taking up a seat, and across from them is an empty one.
“We saved you a seat,” Mia says, pulling her mouth away from Ian’s long enough to talk and breathe.
“Thanks,” I say sliding into it. I put my ear buds in and pull the hood of my Huron Band sweatshirt over my head.
Just as soon as I close my eyes I feel the dip in my seat. Opening one, I peek to catch a glimpse of Wade Hill squeezing into the seat next to me.
“Sorry, Sinta,” he says, after settling in. “I asked Mrs. Franklin for my own seat but she told me there wasn’t enough room. Mrs. Burgess told me to sit next to you, since you’re so skinny.”
I close my eyes. This is a punishment.
I hear the creak of the door closing and, after a few minutes, the bus begins to move.
“Testing, testing,” Ms. Burgess’ voice projects over the loud speaker. She’s the new young teacher who just started teaching at our school this year. “How about I sing everyone a nice little lullaby to get you all to sleep, hmm?
Oh. My. God.
“Can someone please tell her she isn’t auditioning for American Idol,” I mutter.
Wade laughs. His meaty arm brushes up against mine as he does.
Let the fun begin.

Urban Fantasy / Sci-Fi Romance
Book #3 Can be Read as a Standalone.
Date Published: December 15, 2013

Book description:
Thanks to a magical transplant from an inter-dimensional enforcer, Hailey Parrish can transform into a hawk. When someone begins dismembering hikers along the Appalachian Trail, the enforcers make use of her feathery talents to pursue the killer. Unfortunately, like most things in Hailey’s life, there is nothing ordinary about the assignment. Their target turns out to be maddeningly elusive, they rescue a stray dog that makes a sewage treatment plant seem pleasantly fragrant, and stopping the murders turns out to be the least of their worries.

Special Attraction, the third book in the Coursodon Dimension series, combines paranormal romance, urban fantasy, a bit of science fiction and a healthy dose of quirky humor.

My opinion:

This is the third book of the series but it can be read without reading the previous two.

The first paragraph is the brilliant start for this story. You read about a scene of massacre that made me what to know more. The plot is original and the book is very well written. The story is full of paranormal elements, suspense and mystery. I absolutely loved this.

Hailey Parrish is a very special and unusual main character. We read her perspective of things, since she is the narrator of the story. She has to investigate unusual crimes, but she doesn’t do it alone.

The characters are amazing. I loved Hailey, Alex and Sebastian and the relationship between all of them. They have strong personalities and a fantastic sense of humour.

The love story between Hailey and Alex is on the background. I consider that it is a good addition to the story, but not too much to distract you from the main plot.

The killer has a signature: body parts left around, which led to a dead end. Hailey and Alex have to find the killer in order to stop him from killing again, but that won’t be an easy task. There are some paragraphs that made jump of my chair with the will of knowing what was going to happen after that.

The book is easy to read, especially because M.L. Ryan made it so interesting.

I’m not going to write more because I don’t want to spoil this story for any of those who decide to read it.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read paranormal romance or urban fantasy.

 About the author:

M.L. Ryan isMLRyan blackandwhite a professional woman – which is not to say that she gave up her amateur status, but rather that she is over-educated with a job that reflects her one-time reluctance to leave school and get “real” work – and she spends a lot of time in that profession reading highly techni
cal material.
She has many stories rolling around in her head, and she finally decided to write some of them. She prefers literature that isn’t saddled with excruciating symbolism, ponderous dialogue or worldly implications. She also doesn’t like plots so reliant on love at first sight that it makes her feel like her head might implode.
She lives in Tucson, Arizona with her husband and teenage son, four cats, two dogs and an adopted desert tortoise.

Book Tour: Finding Me by Dawn Brazil – Book Review

Reading Addiction Blog Tours

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Kindle and paperback Amazon.co.uk    |    Kindle and paperback Amazon.com:

finding me

Young Adult Urban Fiction
Sixteen-year-old Chloe Carmichael’s perfect world is in chaos.

It’s not because she has a vision of her boyfriend murdered. And then he’s found dead exactly as she saw. It’s not because she suddenly has the ability to move objects when she’s upset. It’s kinda cool to close a door without touching it. It’s not her overbearing mother who only cares about appearances. Chloe’s grown accustomed to her family's distance.

So what has Chloe cringing in fear?

It’s a love that defies reason. It’s a love that speaks to the heart. It demands attention. But Chloe struggles with a love that exposes the soul. What will her family think? What will her friends think? And is she worthy of his love.

And it’s having to become another person for a new group of people. Chloe knows she’s not perfect but apparently she was when she was Amanda in another life. Her new friends won’t let her forget. It’s the stench of death that hoovers over her every move. It’s the threat of finality as she tries to acclimate to a life of super human proportions. It’s an enemy she can’t see, doesn’t remember, and can be anyone she’s ever known. But her enemy knows her well. She’s the lone person with the knowledge to destroy him. But she doesn't remember.

And it’s never discovering who she really is before finality meets reality.

My opinion:

Finding Me by Dawn Brazil was an amazing surprise. I absolutely loved it.

This is the story about Chloe who is apparently just a girl like many of other girls. Her life changes suddenly and she it takes time to understand her new self.

We follow her in her adventures, encounters, thoughts and dreams. After a tragic moment that you read about in the beginning of the book Chloe meets Chris, a new boy at school. This seems a little bit of a chiché but I think that the original plot makes these little things have a different impact.

After meeting Chis, the story really begins. Chloe finds out she can do things that seem impossible and she has a hard time understanding and accepting it. She needs answers that are not given to her from the beginning. Fantasy is all around, however sometimes Chloe has some troubles bearing the reality among the magic. While she has no answers, Chloe has a hard time trying to pretend everything is normal and the same; when the answers start to come up it doesn’t become that much easier either.

I love the writing. It’s easy to read but at the same time is thrilling and very emotional at times. I was hooked from the beginning. I didn’t feel like this with a book for some time now, even if the latest books I read were really good. I could picture many of the scenes in my mind so perfectly. It also has some good twists in the story, which made me want to read more to see what was going to happen next. Dawn Brazil made an excellent job.

The plot is good and original, yet simple which makes it a pleasant reading. Some of the parts were really surprising and you can find some suspense and mystery until the end. The characters are well built. I loved Chloe, Chris and even Samantha.

The love story is a good addition to the plot, not distracting the reader from the rest of the story. It’s a teenager love story like many others, but the originality of the plot and the characters in it made it special.

The ending is another twist, I wasn’t expecting it. If a sequel for this book comes out, I will definitely read it.

If you like YA books you should read this book.
